Youth Leader Application

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor. - 1 Corinthians 3:8

What to expect as a youth leader…..

  1. Saying hello

Jesus said that as the good shepherd, “The sheep know my voice”, and that He “calls them by name”. This He talks to His sheep and knows them on a personal level. As leaders this is one of the foundational aspects of the ministry, simply reaching out to say hello and get to know the students more personally week by week.

2. Mentorship

Paul said, “follow me as I follow Christ”. As leaders we are responsible to lead by example and with the word of God. For some students our leaders are the only godly examples they have. For others we are an additional godly influence outside of their parents to guide them in the way of the Lord and to pray with them in times of need.

3. Stepping up

Leaders who show faithfulness and uphold the standards of leadership in Titus 1 are often invited by our pastors to do more over time. This can include taking on responsibilities like, teaching sermons at services, taking ownership & teaching age group, hosting and running events, and more.

Common questions & misconceptions

How do I know if I am spiritually mature enough to serve?

Compare your life to what the Bible says is the standard of a leader in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. It’s not about how long you’ve been saved, but how deeply He has changed you.

I’m not sure if I have enough time

Leadership in youth ministry is a serious commitment, however you can adjust your time commitment as well. Our pastors are understanding and experienced at working with schedules.

But I am not a good teacher/public speaker.

You will not be required to teach classes or preach sermons. Most of the ministry is interpersonal ministry, talking with students one-on-one or in small groups. Some leaders are invited into roles of teaching, but by no means is that a general requirement.

Is youth ministry just social hour, loud music, and games?

No. We believe that Youth Ministry is the bridge for students between Sunday school and the main sanctuary for our students. So, we prepare our students for adult church by exposing them to aspects of it through 30-45 minute teachings, congregational worship, and opportunities to volunteer. As a young peer ministry we do see it is very important to leverage our smaller group and make sure our students connect with each other and have fun, but by no means are those the defining qualities of the ministry.

Am I too old?

We have seen God use adults younger and older in this ministry. God has no age limit for His use. In fact, our students need a leadership team that is diverse in age. We need the energy of the younger who can run with them, and the wisdom of the older who have already gone ahead.

How do I go to church if I’m always serving with the youth?

It’s important that you are spiritually healthy and fed to pour yourself into our students. For example if you serve at the 9am service, you will attend the 11am service and vice versa.

Applying to become a youth leader

The application process is as follows:

  1. Apply for leadership online: This will be a short application with a few questions about who you are. You will be notified via email/text when your application has been seen and if it has been approved.

  2. If approved you will be sent a more comprehensive application regarding your background, reasons for wanting to serve, spiritual maturity, and theological beliefs.

  3. Upon approval our Youth Pastor will contact you to setup an in-person meeting to discuss with you the standards, expectations, and practical details of the ministry as well as answer any questions you may have to see if this is a good fit for you. If you decide to commit to serving in the ministry, you will also be provided with a quick preparation brief about youth leading.

  4. Before attending any services or events you will be required to get finger-printed at a local LiveScan

  5. Upon clearance, you will start a four week period as a probational leader, then meet with our Youth Pastor one final time to review your experience over those four weeks. If you upheld the standards agreed upon you will be asked to continue as a permanent leader.
